Drum roll, please…
The Career Communicators Speech Contest, held on August 15th, was a success. Every year we have two contests, one in the spring and one in the fall. The fall contest included an Evaluation contest where contestants observe a target speech and present a two-to three-minute evaluation of the test speech; and a Humorous Speech contest where contestants present a five-to seven-minute humorous speech that must be thematic in nature (opening, body, and close), not a monologue (series of one-liners).
Durdona Shovkatova provided a target speech entitled “False Hope” which proved that words have power. We were all impressed by her speech about how using curse words can hurt someone’s feelings. Also, thanks to Dennis Timko and Joe Davis who did a great job evaluating her speech. They also did a stellar job on their humorous speeches.
Joe’s humorous speech was about persistence and how sometimes it doesn’t pay off. He kept us on the edge of our seats with his story about purchasing a deep freezer and then having to transport it home using only a dolly. Later that day Joe found out that a relative bought a pickup truck. Timing is everything.
Dennis’ humorous speech was about a relationship with a girlfriend some three decades ago in which they both loved nature, but nature didn’t love them back. Dennis regaled us with his adventures with lobsters and raccoons and bears, oh, my!
And the winners of our 2017 fall contest are….
Humorous Speech–Dennis Timko
Cutest Animal–Raccoon (who guest starred in Dennis’ humor speech)
